An heirloom variety, Cannellini Lingot, a bush bean, also called bunch beans, is a premium cannellini bean. Classified as a shell bean, it sets pea-shaped buds that blossom into small “perfect” flowers followed by cylindrical 6- to 8-inch green pods containing edible elongated white seeds. A seed vegetable, also known as legumes, these rich, delectable, meaty, white kidney beans are a favorite in Italian cuisine.
This herbaceous tender annual is a determinate variety, growing in a low, compact—22 to 26 inches tall—self-supporting bush that stands erect, suitable for containers and window boxes. The plant produces an above average yield that holds well, ensuring a large, one-time crop. For a continual, season-long harvest, succession plant every two weeks until mid-August.
Easy to grow and trouble free, even for the new gardener, this shallow-rooted plant prefers a sunny location with moist, fertile, organically rich, well-drained loams. Open pollinated, it produces seed that will grow true to variety, ideal for seed saving.
A warm-season vegetable, sensitive to cold temperatures and frost, it should be direct sown into warm spring soil after all danger of frost has passed. Protect plants if temperatures are expected to dip below 50 degrees F. Mulching helps to moderate soil temperature and to maintain soil moisture. Row covers offer added protection from heavy frost.
Plants can also be started indoors. If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.
