All-America Selections (AAS) Winner 2022
An F1 hybrid in the Vertigo series, Vertigo Deep Blue is a low-growing, flowering annual offering late spring through fall interest, typically blooming until first frost. The cute, velvety, tricolored flowers are deep blue with a sky blue and yellow center. The 1-inch blooms are long-lasting and non-fading (even in strong sunlight) and come in abundance, creating a continuous, eye-catching show of color for months, attracting hummingbirds to the garden.
A Torenia fournieri, commonly called wishbone flower, clown flower, or bluewings, Vertigo Deep Blue is a member of the snapdragon family (Plantaginaceae). An excellent garden performer, vigorous and healthy, this perky plant maintains a tight, compact, mounded habit of glossy, light-green foliage. Vertigo Deep Blue is shown to best effect when massed or grouped in beds, borders, containers, or hanging baskets. It also makes a good houseplant and a particularly nice table centerpiece.
Stout and easy to grow, Vertigo Deep Blue can be grown in sun or shade. The soil should be rich and moist, but well-drained and never soggy. It stands up to heat, humidity, rain, and strong sunlight; however, a location with morning sun and afternoon shade may be best in warmer regions. Torenia is generally pest- and problem-free, but good air circulation is important to keep it disease-free. Nipping off the growing tip of seedlings at 3 inches tall encourages branching and a bushier plant, pruning and fertilizing after flowering encourages new blooms, and mulching maintains moisture and keeps roots cool in hot climates.
Direct sow torenia seed into the garden in spring after the chance of frost has passed and the soil has warmed or start seeds indoors 10 to 12 weeks before the last frost date and transplant. If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.
This seed comes as a pellet. Pelleted seeds are small seeds that have been clay-coated to make them larger and more uniform in size and shape, making them easier to handle when planting.
