Early and heavy flowering
Fleuroselect Gold Medal 1999
The varieties in the Sundrops Mixture Nemesia are brightly colored cool-season annuals that typically bloom early to mid spring, accompanying spring pansies. In mild climates, they may bloom from late spring to the first frost. Compact and uniform, the plants set a profusion of orchid-like blooms in strong, brilliant shades of golden yellow, clear pink, sunset red, flaming orange, and creamy white, with a wide array of patterns. Long-lasting, the fragrant flowers sustain bees, butterflies, and birds.
The Sundrops Mixture contains Nemesia strumosa varieties, commonly called nemesia, pouch nemesia, and cape jewels. The plants have an erect, mounded habit and a rapid growth rate. Multistemmed and bushy, they are especially well-suited for containers but are also perfect for beds, borders, and edging. Open pollinated, Sundrops Mixture produces seed that grows true to variety, ideal for seed saving.
As the name suggests, Sundrops are full sun lovers, but they may perform best with some afternoon shade, especially in warm climates or during hot weather. Sundrops prefer moderate daytime temperatures and cool nights and will not tolerate hot, humid conditions, dying back during summer heat. Nemesias grow best in well-draining, moist, loam or sand with a neutral pH. Water freely in dry weather. Soil should not be soggy, however, or root rot could become a problem. Pinch tips to promote bushier growth.
Direct sow nemesia seed into the garden in spring after the chance of frost has passed or start seeds indoors 6 weeks before transplanting. Although nemesia is easily germinated from seed, in the garden, they are extremely slow to germinate at temperatures below 60°F. If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.
