Green Mist Ammi is an herbaceous annual or biennial, grown for its attractive foliage as well as its charming flowers. Overall, Green Mist presents an airy aspect of billowy blooms suspended atop a gauzy haze of feathery blue-green foliage. The plant sets large lacy flowerheads full of tiny white flowers with a pale green cast. Borne on erect, highly branched stems, the domed flowerheads make great cut flowers, fresh or dried. In fact, Green Mist’s flowers and foliage are staples for flower arrangements and mixed bouquets. Typically used as filler, the flowers add volume and complement focal flowers, while the greenery provides interesting texture and a soft finishing touch. But a bouquet of Green Mist alone makes a stunning bouquet. Left in the garden, the nectar- and pollen-rich flowers appeal to a wide range of pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and beneficial insects, including ladybugs. The dried seedheads that follow sustain songbirds.
An Ammi visnaga variety, commonly called false Queen Anne’s lace, lace flower, bishop’s flower, or toothpick weed, Green Mist has an upright habit and grows vigorously. Under optimal conditions, the plant will self-seed if seed heads are not removed. Shown to best effect when grouped or massed in beds and borders, the plant is perfect for a cottage garden and a must in a cutting garden.
A low-maintenance plant, Green Mist grows best in a sunny to partly shady location with rich, moist, well-draining soil.
Sow seeds outdoors after all danger of frost has passed or start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date and transplant into the garden once soil has warmed. If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.
Note: The milky sap from this plant may cause skin irritation to sensitive individuals. Gloves are recommended for harvesting.
