National Garden Bureau named 2024 “The Year of the African Violet”
African Violet Little Gems are adorable new varieties that are fun and rewarding to grow. The plants are on the smaller side, typically growing 3 to 8 inches in diameter. Grown under ideal conditions, these charming houseplants flower profusely several times a year, beginning 6 to 9 months after sprouting. The pink, white, red, and blue blooms, some with blotches or streaks, are perched atop thick, fuzzy green foliage, with some plants having variegation.
Saintpaulia ionantha, better known as African violets, are herbaceous perennial plants that grow slowly and stay compact. They thrive in smaller containers-ideally, the pot size should be about one-third of the leaf span-and require a light, well-aerated potting mix with a acidic pH between 5.8 and 6.2. For best results, place African violets near a bright window within 12 inches or under fluorescent or LED lights. Proper lighting ensures the leaves grow flat in a horizontal pattern, while insufficient light causes the leaf stems to grow taller, stretching upwards. Maintain evenly moist soil-neither overly soggy nor completely dry-and provide regular fertilization. Ideal growing conditions include temperatures between 65 and 80°F and humidity of 40 to 60 percent.
With optimal care, African violets have a lifespan of approximately 20 years, and some can live up to 50 years. As symbols of devotion, loyalty, and commitment, they make thoughtful gifts, particularly for occasions like Mother’s Day or birthdays. Loved by container gardeners, these vibrant plants bring a splash of color to both home and office environments.
