With big blooms as magnificent as the name suggests, African Sunset wows in the annual bed, the flowerpot, windowbox, and hanging baskets. A bloom machine from late spring into autumn, this spreading Petunia belongs in every garden where rich, unique, plentiful color is valued. Add it to yours this season!
African Sunset is a 2014 All-America Selection, and one glance shows you why. There’s no other color like it in the Petunia family — a shade of blood-orange with intense hues and great staying power. Our Director of Seeds described the color as “unreal,” and certainly there is nothing else in the garden to rival its intensity. And as if that weren’t enough, these 2½-inch blooms bounce back effortlessly from rain, refuse to fade in the hottest summer sun, and self-clean so you never have to worry about deadheading. And they arise profusely all season long!
But All-America Selections aren’t just pretty faces. They have to be gardenworthy across the country, and fairly easy to grow. African Sunset has these traits down pat! The seed germinates in a snap (like all Petunias), and just about 2 months after you sow it indoors in your Bio Dome or other seed-starting medium, you’ll see the first blooms open! These are followed by many, many others during African Sunset’s long season of glory in the sunny garden or your best containers.
Like all petunias, this one appreciates rich, well-drained soil and regular watering and feeding. It reaches about 10 inches high and spreads just under 2 feet wide, so space the plants 20 to 22 inches apart in the bed for dense, unbroken coverage. Well-branched and bursting with soft green foliage that complements those hot blooms perfectly, African Sunset is a showstopper you’ll spot from way down the street.
Tolerant of heat and humidity, African Sunset will bloom all summer and, in most climates, well into fall. It’s a workhorse, though you’d never know it from its ‘designer’ look! Add it to your garden this season . . . but hurry. It’s going to be super-popular! Pkt is 10 seeds.
