Cherokee Sunset could make a Mum blush! These autumnal colors just radiate warmth, every petal-packed bloom a study in golden, orange, bronze, and mahogany! They bloom all summer, lasting even past their cousins Autumn Colors and Goldstrum strain to greet fall. Soaking up heat and indifferent to drought, this native annual keeps on blooming when others have given up, and is a snap to grow in the sunny garden. What could be more delightful?
The plant reaches 24 to 30 inches tall and about a foot wide, with a well-branched, get-up-and-go habit that needs no fussing over. The flowers begin to open as soon as the warm summer weather sets in, and from that point on, there’s no stopping them! Ranging from 3 to 4 1/2 inches across and all fully or semi-double, these blooms are as varied and magnificent as the quickly-changing colors of the sunset. A far cry from the humble Black-Eyed Susan, this Rudbeckia features star shapes, water lily types, pompons — just about anything fancy, frilly, and colorful! No wonder Cherokee Sunset won a 2002 All America Selection award!
Easy to grow, this native annual adapts to just about any conditions, but needs plenty of sunshine for best flowering, and prefers moist, well-drained soil. A superb choice for beds, borders, and meadow gardens, it brings in the butterflies all season long! Good companions include tough-as-nails Coneflower White Swan, tall and airy Cleome Mix, and dwarf perennial Salvia Blue Queen. Pkt is 50 seeds.
