“Brokali” is a cross between Calabrese broccoli and a kind of Chinese kale called gai lan. It has long, very tender stalks and elongated, flattish florets, unlike the “bouquet” shaped florets of traditional broccoli. The flavor is divine, and the plate appeal is powerful!
To harvest Apollo, first remove the main head of the plant as soon as it reaches an appetizing size. Then let the side shoots continue to grow. They’ll keep coming all season, so allow extra space for this heavy producer — it should reach about 24 to 28 inches high and wide. You’ll love harvesting fresh spears every few days!
