When you want big yields of vitamin-packed dark green collards, and time is of the essence, Bulldog Hybrid is the variety to grow. This Georgia-type collard, outstripping the competition in terms of speed, regrowth, and bolt resistance.
Bulldog is very uniform, with large, slightly savoyed, wavy leaves of dark green held up and just slightly outward. You can start picking the leaves young (they regrow very quickly), or let them mature and harvest the entire plant less than 10 weeks from sowing. In fact, if you like whole-plant harvesting, you can sow the seeds successively for several weeks, and enjoy more than one big crop of Bulldog!
And if you are growing a spring crop but the weather turns hot way ahead of schedule, Bulldog is terrifically bolt resistant. It will keep growing, giving you a chance to harvest more leaves before the strongest summer heat sets in.
Bulldog is vigorous and widely adapted, suitable for spring and fall crops in most areas and winter crops in the south and west. It’s not finicky about growing conditions, and delivers a very generous crop every time.
Like all Collards, Bulldog is wonderfully tolerant of both heat and cold; in fact, its flavor is sweetened by a little frost. Sow seeds directly in early spring or in late summer for a fall crop; or start indoors 5 to 7 weeks before setting out. If you want tall plants with full-sized leaves to harvest all at once space the seedlings 15 inches apart. For smaller plants with leaves that can be picked as they arise, space them just 6 to 8 inches apart. Pkt is 200 seeds.
