Why grow the first tomato on the block when you can have the first Sunflower instead — and then many more to come, from a single plant?! Cherry Rose opens its blooms within 40 days of sowing, then continues for a long season of radiant beauty.
These 3- to 4-inch blooms arise on tall, well-branched plants. They have a large chocolate-brown central cone and closely spaced deep red petals tipped in bright yellow-gold. Equally suited for garden and cutting, they make a lovely contrast to yellow- and gold-petaled Sunflowers.
This plant reaches 5 feet tall and about 2 to 3 feet wide. Very floriferous, it is a splendid sight in the back of the sunny border or bed, its blooms welcoming summer into the garden.
Sunflowers are native American wildflowers, famously easy to grow and so beautiful. Direct-sow the seeds in the warm spring soil. They grow very quickly, and may need support from strong winds as they reach new heights! Cut the blooms or let them remain on the plant for the birds to enjoy as the seeds dry out in autumn. Also useful as part of a Three Sisters Native American planting; sunflower is widely considered the 4th sister! Pkt is 25 seeds.
