Move over, powderpuff Hollyhocks! This new wide-open, brilliantly-colored variety is the most elegant yet, with a merry mixture of flower forms and rich shades! Deep blackcurrant (with a white edge) in cool climates, bright berry with a wide white margin in warmer areas, this diva keeps you guessing about everything except the quantity and beauty of its blooms!
Most Hollyhocks are single-, semi-, or fully-double flowered, but Creme de Cassis cannot be pinned down. Not only does the petal count vary from plant to plant, it changes along every stalk! Overdressed doubles rub shoulders with blazing singles on these massive 5- to 6-foot stalks, each bloom an impressive 2 to 4 inches across, heavily veined, and utterly lovely. What a showoff!
Creme de Cassis is not fickle when it comes to bloomtime or adaptability, however. Expect a heavy showing of color in early and midsummer in the sunny garden. Hardy from one end of the country to the other, this Hollyhock is equally at home in rich loam and dry soils. Give it plenty of sunshine and well-drained soil, feed it heavily during growth, and you will be richly rewarded for several summers!
These plants are about 2 feet wide, with an upright habit that makes them really jump out from the back of the border or along a fence or building. Hardy in zones 3-9. Pkt is 15 seeds.
