Stock up on baskets and tall planters — Firecracker is here! This British import is just about the most beautiful grape tomato we have ever grown, and we would call it an ornamental if it weren’t so productive and delicious, too. You are going to love it all summer long, as it sets crop after crop of pointy, striped, multicolored mini tomatoes with a sweet bite!
A trailing variety that reaches about 14 inches high and lolls up to 3 feet over the sides of baskets, planters, window boxes, and other tall containers, Firecracker Hybrid sets small clusters of scrumptious fruit all over its cascading stems. A fully fruiting plant looks like an ornamental, dazzling your patio, deck, or other outdoor space with brilliant color and interesting form.
But when it comes to production and flavor, Firecracker means business. These little grapes weigh just 1.25 ounces each, but are packed with sugary goodness (7% on the Brix scale). And they look unlike any other tomato in the garden, with one pointy tip and bright golden-orange and red stripes!
Expect up to 80 fruits on this plant, which is indeterminate and so repeats all summer long, provided you pick the tomatoes promptly (and who wouldn’t?!). Treat it as you would any other tomato in the garden, keeping it well watered and fed, with plenty of sunshine and heat, all summer. You will be richly rewarded!
Start seeds indoors 5 to 6 weeks before the last frost date. Plant outdoors when danger of frost is past and night temperatures consistently remain above 55 degrees F. If an unexpected late frost is forecasted, move baskets and planters to a frost-free location, such as the house or garage. Set plants 2 to 2½ feet apart. Packet is 10 seeds.
