In a class all its own, Funky is the perfect Begonia for hanging baskets, window boxes, and tall planters. These double blooms are profuse and beautiful, dangling from weeping stems on beautifully rounded plants that look almost upside-down!
Funky gets its name from its unique habit. This is an interspecific cross of two of the very best Begonia species: tuberosa, which is responsible for the extra-large, richly colored flowers; and boliviensis, which is far more heat tolerant than other types. The result? Big double blooms and plenty of ’em from early summer through fall on easy-to-grow, super-tugh plants!
Reaching just 8 to 12 inches high, this annual spreads (or cascades) up to 18 inches over the sides of baskets and pots. The foliage really contributes to the beauty of the presentation: it is a bold shade of olive green, very large, and nicely toothed. won’t often be out of bloom, but when it is, the foliage is shown to great advantage!
Best of all are the blooms, though. They range from bubblegum pink to deep rose, many marked with luminous golden streaks and haloes. The petals are layered on top of one another, creating an almost hose-in-hose look. Stunning!
And Funky doesn’t mind full sun, except in the hottest areas. It loves dappled shade, or a mix of morning and afternoon sun/shade, but it can also thrive in the deeper shade areas of the patio and garden. In other words, it’s thoroughly versatile — a trait few plants can equal!
To make the growing easy, we offer this seed in pelleted form. Each pellet contains multiple seeds, so you just plant one. Funky has a higher germination rate than most older Begonia varieties, so you will be pleasantly surprised at the performance of these seeds!
Pink takes about 14 to 16 weeks to go from seed to bloom, so start it indoors in mid- to late winter in a humid setting (the bathroom windowsill is ideal if it’s broad enough and reasonably draft-free). In the garden, it is content in any good soil with reasonable drainage and consistent moisture. Pkt is 10 pelleted seeds.
