Early, very productive, and super-compact, Kandy Korn is a pleasure to grow. This baby pumpkin grows on a bush-habit plant that takes up far less space in the garden than most others, sets 8 to 10 fruits, and finishes in no time!
But of course, all these excellent characteristics aren’t why gardeners love Kandy Korn. It’s those perfect dark-orange fruits, each just 1 to 1½ pounds (little more than 4 inches in diameter!), and all adorable! Boasting a strong, curved dark green handle, these baby pumpkins are easy to handle and look absolutely perfect on the porch steps, as a centerpiece on the dining table, and carved into Halloween faces.
Kandy Korn is quite tolerant of powdery mildew, making it a good choice for humid and wet climates where other pumpkins may struggle. These little plants look as good in August as they did in May, even if summer has been rainy and muggy. And they mature up to 2 weeks ahead of most other baby pumpkins!
Pumpkins are exceptionally easy to grow, given adequate space and patience! Sow the seeds outdoors when danger of frost is past, or start indoors in peat pots. Plant the seedlings (or thin to) 3 to 5 feet apart. Corn and beans are traditional pumpkin companions in a Three Sisters planting; other good friends in the pumpkin patch are nasturtiums, marigolds, oregano, and dill, all of which help repel pests such as squash beetles. Pumpkins also grow well with melons and with other varieties of squash.
