You simply won’t believe how quickly and abundantly this little Monkey Flower leaps into bloom! Less than 2 months after you sow the seed indoors, you’ll be admiring the cheery blotched faces of this adaptable annual!
The Magic series is by far the first Monkey Flower to bloom each year, with masses of showy 1¾- to 2-inch blooms in 16 luscious color combinations. The soft, satiny feel of the petals and their wide-open trumpet shape may remind you of Petunias, but the color intensity and markings are more like Pansies! (They make an excellent succession planting to Pansies, especially in warm climates where Pansies aren’t happy in the summer heat). This plant forms a neat, plump little mound just 10 inches tall and no more than a foot wide, its blooms shooting up above the foliage to greet you from early summer through midsummer. In this mix, you get all the colors in the series: white flame, yellow blotch, yellow flame, crimson, ivory, ivory bicolor, orange, red, wine, yellow, yellow bicolor, pastel pink shades, pastel yellow improved, peach, pastel mixed, and white with blotch. Delightful!
But the best part about Magic is its adaptability. If your soil is clay-ey, moist — or, let’s face it, WET! — or otherwise unsuitable for picky plants, call on this Monkey Flower! It’s great for bedding, and its compact size makes it a charmer in containers of all sizes. It blooms readily in full sun (preferable in cooler climates) to partial shade (essential in the deep South and Southwest), and likes to be kept moist — not a problem in poorly-draining soil!
If you like this mix, try some of the individual colors: Yellow with Red Blotch and White with Blotch.
This Monkey Flower is actually a perennial, hardy in zones 6-9, but it is so short-lived that it’s best just grown as an annual. With a seed-to-bloom time as short as this, sowing each spring is a snap! Pkt is 50 seeds.
