So easy, native phlox is perfect for a child’s garden
Days to Maturity: 70
Mixed Annual Phlox is a blend of native varieties offering summer into fall interest. Long and heavy blooming, Mixed Annual Phlox puts on a showy display of pink, purple, rose, red, and white blooms. Borne in clusters at stem ends, the lightly fragrant flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to the garden.
The flowers in the Annual Phlox mix have an upright, multi-branched, mounded habit of oblong to lance-shaped bright green leaves and a rapid growth rate. Their low-growing form is shown to best effect massed in drifts or grouped as edging or ground cover in beds and borders. These fun flowers also create stunning containers and hanging baskets and are perfect for a child’s garden.
Easy to grow, phlox prefer full sun to partial shade and loose, humusy, dry to medium moist, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. The plants tolerate heat and some dryness and repel deer. In optimal conditions, the plants will self-sow and return from year to year.
Direct sow phlox seed after the last frost in spring, as soon as the soil is warm, or start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date and transplant after all threat of frost has passed when day temperatures range between 62° to 64°F and night temperatures range between 60° to 62°F.
If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.
A native plant, phlox is indigenous to Texas and the southeastern U.S. Native plants are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. Naturally adapted to the climate and soil conditions of the region, they thrive without fertilizers or extra watering, once established. They also act as natural pest controls, reducing the need for pesticides in the garden. Landscaping with native plants promotes biodiversity and provides shelter and quality food for wildlife and pollinators, bringing gardens to life.
