A member of the Prairie Blaze™ series, Green is a showy perennial wildflower that blooms heavily from mid-spring to late summer, often with sporadic blooms into fall. Early- and long-blooming, Prairie Blaze Green sets daisyesque flowers with gorgeous lime-green rays. Borne on short, sturdy stems, the uniquely colored flowers make excellent, long-lasting cuts for floral arrangements and bouquets. Left in the garden, the flowers attract bees and butterflies; and the dried end-of-season seed heads that follow provide sustenance for songbirds as well as interest for the winter garden, especially when dusted in freshly fallen snow.
An Echinacea purpurea variety, also known as a coneflower, Prairie Blaze Green has a compact, upright habit and a rapid growth rate. The plant freely self-seeds if seed heads are not removed. Coneflower is shown to best effect when grouped in beds and borders or massed in naturalized areas. But they’re also great accent and container plants.
Easy to grow and low maintenance, coneflowers grow best in sunny to partly shady locations with average, dry to medium moist, well-draining soils having a slightly acidic 5.8 to 6.2 pH. The plants are extremely adaptable and can tolerate poor soils, including clay soil and shallow, rocky soil, but good drainage is essential. Deadheading is not required for continuous blooms. Coneflowers are deer resistant and drought, heat, and humidity tolerant. Extremely cold hardy, they overwinter well.
