The Sensation® series is incredible! Sky Blue is simply one of the best garden plants available anywhere, destined to become a mainstay of borders, containers, edging, and even groundcover.
Extremely vigorous and quick-growing, this perennial wastes no time forming neat rosettes of foliage from which long, sturdy bloomspikes emerge, studded with lilac buds that open to brilliant azure blooms. A fully-blooming stand of Sensation® Sky Blue is an awe-inspiring sight — and one that you will have plenty of opportunity to enjoy, since the flowers keep coming from spring into fall.
Hardy to -30 degrees F yet thriving in the intense heat and humidity of southern and midwestern summers, Sensation® Sky Blue offers gray-green foliage that reaches just 10 to 12 inches high but spreads 16 inches wide. Deer, rabbits, and other nibblers leave this plant alone, but once the long, bud-packed bloomspikes arise, butterflies find it irresistible.
The flowers open from the bottom of the spike first, creating a two-tone effect. Good side branching means that shorter, smaller spikes are continuously emerging as the old ones mature, and if you deadhead the spent flowers you will get constant rebloom all summer long and into autumn. Sensation® Sky Blue just doesn’t know how to quit!
Like all of the Sensation® series, Sky Blue is dense and shrubby, making a good groundcover and weed suppressor in the border, on dry slopes or banks, and anywhere else you have nonstop sun and reasonable soil drainage. Once established in the garden, it is quite drought-tolerant, and is untroubled by pests and diseases. A magnificent addition to any setting, we offer it our highest recommendation. Zones 4-9.
