A quick-growing, absolutely delicious watermelon you must taste to really appreciate, Shiny Boy is a must-have for the vegetable garden! These 20-pound melons consistently win taste tests, boasting a “sweet tropical” flavor (to quote the AAS judges!) that out-satisfies all others. And as if this weren’t enough, the yields on this vigorous, healthy plant are terrific!
Named for its glossy, smooth striped rind, Shiny Boy takes off like crazy, yet this vining plant won’t sprawl all over the place, and can even be grown vertically if given support for its giant fruit! It reaches 18 inches high and about 12 feet long, setting huge melons every step of the way. If you want to start the plant early indoors (recommended for climates with very short growing seasons), begin it 4 weeks before last frost and keep the seeds and seedlings nice and warm. The Bio Dome is best, but you can wrap the seedling flat or peat pot in plastic to keep in the warmth if need be. Don’t transplant until the garden soil is nice and warm!
Shiny Boy boasts very dark red flesh with the perfect blend of sugar and crunch. Wonderfully aromatic, it offers an old-fashioned burst of flavor that we associate with grandmother’s vegetable garden — rich, lasting, and authentic! You will love it.
