This ornamental pepper is just for fun, and I predict you won’t be able to resist potting up a few in your best containers as well as edging the border or other garden accent with a long line of them! A dwarf plant less than a foot tall and even more narrow, it offers brightly variegated foliage and charming peppers that turn colors as they ripen, for an ever-changing display that lasts for many weeks!

Shu is a compact, upright plant with cream-splashed leaves that look showy from spring right up to frost. In summer it covers itself with 1- to 1 1/2-inch peppers that begin white, then turn all shades of yellow and gold before finally ripening to a deep, rich red. Though perfectly edible, they have little flavor and are best grown just for their beauty. (You won’t want to remove a single one from the plant anyway — they look too good there, like a summer version of a Christmas tree!)

Shu reaches just 8 to 10 inches high and 6 to 8 inches wide, so it fits comfortably even in a 4-inch pot, and fills a slightly larger container nicely. It will start setting fruit in early summer if you sow the seeds indoors (start them a week or two after your Tomatoes) and transplant them when the seedlings have at least two sets of leaves and the soil is warm and free from any danger of frost. Peppers are even more sensitive to cold weather than tomatoes, so give them a few extra weeks indoors just to make sure! Pinch the young plants to increase their bushiness.
