Garden Sorrel is one of the best pot herbs, with a tangy, even slightly sour bite. Nutritious and palate-cleansing at once, it is a gourmet herb every garden deserves. Grow it from seed this year for an economical, tasty crop!
Reaching 16 to 24 inches high and 15 to 18 inches wide, this plant sports large, arrow-shaped leaves that can be picked individually from spring through fall. Let the leaves reach 4 or 5 inches long, then harvest them for salads and other culinary uses.
High in oxalic acid, Sorrel thrives in full sun to part shade and deep, rich soil. Great for containers, too, it is easy to grow and will keep producing new leaves all season long.
For best results, begin the seeds indoors in late winter or earliest spring. Drop one seed into each bio-sponge of your Bio Dome, or sow them into seed flats about 1/2-inch deep and a few inches apart, then thin them. You can also direct-sow them into the spring garden a week or two before the last scheduled frost date. Zones 3-9. Pkt is 100 seeds.
